Four Tips For Building Rapport With NLP

Uncategorized Sep 09, 2020
Rapport, when it comes to NLP, refers to the harmony, recognition, and acceptance between two or more people who are at ease with one another.

This also means that, due to the ease they feel, communication is occurring much easier than it would otherwise.

There are many ways to build rapport, but here are four of the most common methods.

1. Be Careful How You Stand and Move
Body language says a lot without there actually being any words. When talking to someone you want to be sure that you are sending the right message to them through your stance and body movements.
  • Crossed arms are a sign of defensiveness or challenging
  • A head tilted down is a sign of shyness and possibly low confidence
  • Constantly looking away or angling your body away from the speaker shows disinterest
  • To build rapport, you need to build trust. So avoid doing the things mentioned above, and instead do the following:
  • Give them your full attention; look at their face when they are talking
  • Make eye contact
  • Angle your body so it faces theirs
  • Nod as they talk to show you are listening attentively

2. Work on Your Auditory Modeling
Auditory modeling refers to your tonality, speaking pace, and pitch.

Tonality: Helps to set the mood of the conversation, as well as tell you the sort of conversation they wish to have, be it serious or amusing.

Speaking pace: How fast you are speaking can affect how well your words are understood by the other person.

Pitch: How loudly you are speaking can affect the overall feel of the conversation.

Building rapport when it comes to auditory modeling means you should make sure you are aware of all these things and try to match the other person so you are on the same level.

This can help the other person relax and add a layer of trust between the two of you.

3. Watch the Words You Use
A word that may have one meaning for you may have a different meaning for someone else.It is important to stay aware of this fact, as it can lead to confusing and potentially upsetting situations. These differences can come from places such as:
  • How they were raised
  • Where they come from
  • Their own personal beliefs and experiences
  • Cultural differences
If you find a difference, try to match the words rather than point it out, unless you are unsure of what they are referring to.Word matching helps to add to the trust they will feel towards you by making them feel more welcomed and understood.

4. Match Your Experiences
Everyone comes from all different lives.

This usually means that you also have had different experiences growing up. Where some have had it easy, others have had struggles.

But, you can also find that you have had similar experiences in some cases. If you find that they say they have experienced something that you have also experienced, bring it up.

This can help create a bond and, therefore, add to the trust you have between each other.

Building rapport in NLP is not necessarily difficult, but it does take time and a great deal of understanding.
